The bikerscout costume is probably one of the more comfortable hard armor suits to wear. Mostly because it is cloth and bits of styrene; it allows you to move much more freely However, it is arguably the more difficult starwars trooper costume to create. First because you need to be able to sew in order to create the "diaper" and second because many of the armor kits do not come precut in the same fashion that stormtrooper armor does. This leaves you a lot of work to do. The helmet is also incredibly difficult to find and just as difficult to get it back into wearable shape. I would not recommend this costume for the beginning enthusiast. |

More Details... I am not trying to make this sound overly negative, but instead provide a realistic view on scout costume creation! I can't tell you how many times we've entered in contests only to have the judges pass us over because they think we buy these easy to assemble, complete in 10 minutes, comes with everything you need, cookie cutter costumes.... :) Here goes! First of all, the helmet is a #@%* to find and work with. Unless you buy the expensive Altman's helmet (over $200US), you will have to buy the hard to find Don Post. Then you will have to rivet, reshape (using a metal bar), and repaint it entirely, and try to find someone to make the decals you painted over. You will have to replace the lens with a better lens, cut out the ears and put screen in, remove all the foam interior and put your own in. Why? The DP helmet is basically too wide compared to the movie helmets, has several weird flappy pieces, bad lenses and a poor color. If you have a huge head, this will be a very painful experience by the way. Now do you still think this is an easy costume? Heheheh, read on... Second is the armor. If you can find someone who is brave enough to secretly sell it, you will either pay a fortune ($400US and it is precut) or pay $200US and have to cut, Dremel, sand, hot glue, heat gun and sew straps on yourself (sorry, no "cut here" lines either, and to make it worse, it can be really difficult to figure out where to cut!!) (The prices may have gone up because of the recent Lucas Lawsuit.) If you get Styrene (cheapest) you will also have to paint the armor, as it has no shine. Lastly, no one has a 100% accurate suit. Each creator has certain good points and bad. Oh not all the dealers sell the boot holster (which you will have to rivet on the boot yourself). Third is the gun. The gun is difficult to find as well -- the only good looking scout guns are the original kenner toy from way back 20 years ago. Looking on Ebay is your best bet, as stores no longer carry these. You will have to repaint it and we also made our own modifications by adding a rewired Droid blaster sound chip inside and you can even add a laser pointer. Yes there are resin versions of this gun but they do not look as nice. It's up to you. Next are the cloth parts. There are a few people who sell the diaper part on the web, but they are a) Expensive b) Usually have overly enormous pockets b) The pockets are in the wrong place, causing the diaper to sit an inch too far down, leaving a huge black gap under the armor c) Not very accurate. You are better off using a local tailor or friend. I had a friend make mine for me, who knows star wars, so a tailor might be a bit more of a challenge. You will also have to construct and sew the belt out of nylon webbing and clips, the armor dealers just sell the sell the plastic armor pieces (little boxes on the belt), not the belt fully constructed, though I could be wrong. The easiest parts are the black flight suit, gloves and the boots. The flight suit you can find at your local army navy surplus store. The boots you can find through Gemplers. You will have to special order them through a 1-800 number, as you shouldn't get the "14 version listed on their site but rather the mysterious 16" version. You will spend up to an hour convincing them that these boots actually exist. Remind them that they do not personally carry them, but the supplier does. The gloves are gauntlet motorcycle gloves. Go to your local motorcycle store or have someone make them for you! Like I said, I'm not trying to be overly negative but this costume is not one of those that you should take on because it looks inexpensive and easy :) Good luck to those who do take on the challenge, I know what you're going to go through!
